Reeves International was selected as the contractor for an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) engagement on the New Betio Hospital project in Tarawa, Kiribati. Reeves International was involved from the concept design milestone and worked closely with MFAT, the Jacobs design team, and key project stakeholders throughout the design phase.
As the ECI contractor, Reeves International provided detailed design, constructability and cost advice to ensure the project was suited to its intended purpose, local conditions and budget constraints. This involvement included the preparation of milestone-based design reviews and cost reports, drawing on Reeves’ extensive experience delivering infrastructure projects in Kiribati and across the Pacific region. The ECI engagement enabled the optimisation of the building design for local connections, with a focus on durability and low-maintenance environmental outcomes, including engineered structural timber framing, polished concrete floors, and fit-for-purpose building services systems.
Stage 1 works comprised essential maternity, birthing and paediatric clinical facilities, designed to reduce patient travel times and relieve pressure on existing local primary health care centres and the Tungaru Central Hospital. Medical equipment provided in partnership with the Government of Japan was incorporated to support the future operational readiness of the facility.
