Covering more than 2,500 square metres, the project delivers climate-resilient infrastructure designed to support the local economy while providing a safe community space during extreme weather events. The market includes new permanent vendor shelters, a kiosk, upgraded water and sanitation facilities, management offices, concrete pavements and drainage, disability access, improved lighting and security and enhanced sea access. The detailed design required close coordination with the project architect, surveyor, and structural and civil engineers to ensure stakeholder needs, regulatory requirements, and site-specific climatic conditions were fully addressed. Climate-resilient features such as a concrete-encased gabion seawall and galvanised steel market structures ensure the facility can withstand rising sea levels and increasingly severe weather conditions, including Category 5 cyclone wind speeds, enabling the market to also function as a shelter during storm events.
